Meet Sensus' Founder
Dan Wampler, Ph.D., saw an exciting opportunity to apply a high technological approach to flavor extraction and founded Sensus in 1999. With more than 15 years of experience in the food and flavor industries, Dr. Wampler began his career with Pillsbury's Green Giant division, where he worked in product development. Later, he held positions with Fries & Fries (now Givaudan), Wild Flavors and most recently Alex Fries (now Degussa), serving as Vice President of Research and Development. With the launch of Sensus, he is combining his background in encapsulation technologies and extraction research with a sophisticated process new to the flavor industry, as well as his own personal interest in production agriculture.

Dr. Wampler's interest in improving flavor retention began when he was a graduate student working in the food processing pilot plant at The Ohio State University. First-hand, he observed the significant loss of flavor during processing, and, later in his career, continued to see fresh top-notes dissipate as a result of thermal process unit operations, including pasteurization, dehydration, concentration and blanching. With the development of a high-technology alternative to traditional processing methods, he recognized the opportunity and launched Sensus.

"As I delved deeper into extraction research, it became clear that existing methods often failed to produce the freshest quality essence and increased the final flavor cost," says Dr. Wampler. "With this integrated processing approach, coupled with Sensus' flavor management focus a new line of superior natural flavor ingredients could be produced. This allows Sensus to afford their customers a technical advantage over their competition, authentic natural flavor tonality and noticeably reduced cost-use."

Dr. Wampler, who holds patents on microwave browning and encapsulation technologies, earned his Ph.D. and Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University. He also received a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati.
